Blake Ohlson, MDBoard Certified Orthopedic Surgeon
Regenerative Medicine Specialist
Dr. Blake Ohlson is a board-certified fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon. He has over 20 years’ experience as an orthopedic surgeon and regenerative medicine specialist. He is passionate about nonsurgical management of orthopedic conditions involving the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot. He offers cutting edge nonoperative treatments that include shockwave, concentrated bone marrow, platelet rich plasma (PRP), M-Fat, and cultured stem cells. These therapies are used to treat problems involving joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones.
Dr. Ohlson is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Chemistry from John Carroll University in 1996. He worked as an analytical chemist before attending medical school. He was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 2001. He completed five years of orthopaedic surgery residency training at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker School of Medicine, followed by a one-year foot and ankle reconstruction fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He relocated to Charleston to begin his practice in 2007.
Dr. Ohlson began using regenerative technologies during his fellowship in 2006. He is a published author and contributing reviewer for the journal, Foot and Ankle International. Dr. Ohlson is actively involved in clinical trials. He was a principal investigator for Lipogems Arise II, a randomized clinical trial using M-fat to treat knee arthritis. He continues to use regenerative technologies for the treatment of problems involving the upper and lower extremity.
Dr. Ohlson co-founded Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Centers in 2024 as an independent practice focused on high-quality, patient-centered operative and nonoperative orthopedic care. His aim is to bring the most advanced and comprehensive treatment options for patients looking to regain mobility and maintain a pain-free active lifestyle. His practice utilizes traditional orthopedic care along with the latest technological advances.
Dr. Ohlson uses ultrasound to treat many of his patients. Ultrasound technology aids in both diagnosis as well as accuracy. Many orthopedic conditions can be diagnosed by ultrasound alone. Injections using ultrasound guidance establish accuracy and promote less pain for patients.
For patients requiring surgery, Dr. Ohlson treats both general orthopaedic and foot and ankle disorders. The scope of his practice includes trauma, arthroscopy, joint replacement, deformity correction and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Ohlson resides in Charleston with his wife, Melissa and their three children. He is a professional musician and multi-instrumentalist. He has recorded several albums and performed throughout the Lowcountry. He is an avid tennis player and enjoys yoga and Peloton.
Dr. Ohlson is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a member of the Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society and South Carolina Medical Association. He has served as a physician for both the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) and ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals).
